The arrival of a new superhero shouldn’t come off as a surprise to anyone who is a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU); what’s more, the introduction of new superheroes in an MCU mid and post-credit scene is practically a rite of passage at this point. However, the MCU’s introduction of a new character and possible superhero in the mid-credits scene of Eternals was still able to take fans by surprise. This was largely achieved thanks to the actor who was introduced in the scene and the character he played. The Eternals mid-credit scene introduced none other than the Harry Styles as Eros/Starfox, brother to Thanos, yes that Thanos. Styles’ character emerges on the ship where three Eternals- Thena (Angelina Jolie), Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), and Druig (Barry Keoghan) are discussing Earth and what could be happening there as they haven’t heard from their friends in weeks. Eros is accompanied by Pip the troll (voiced by Patton Oswalt), who introduces him as a Royal prince of Titan, Brother of Thanos, and the great adventurer Starfox. Eros also identifies himself as an Eternal and offers to help find the others that were taken by Arishem.
Harry styles introduction in the MCU certainly came as a surprise but considering the superstar musician has been taking up more acting roles recently, perhaps his introduction in the MCU was only a matter of time.
It will be interesting to see what his introduction to the MCU will mean for his career at large, but also what his character could mean for MCU lore, given Thanos’ fate and critical reception of The Eternals. While Styles’ MCU introduction is certainly exciting, at the moment, it poses more questions than answers.
Styles is also set to appear as a lead actor in the upcoming movie titled My Policeman and Don’t Worry Darling alongside Florence Pugh, Chris Pine, and Olivia Wilde.
While the sequel to Eternals has not been confirmed by ‘powers that be’ at Marvel Studios, fans are hopeful thanks to Styles’ introduction in the mid-credit scene and the subsequent post-credit scene setting up a bigger and more exciting story that could be explored in the follow-up.
The post-credits scene showed Kit Harington, who played Dane Whitman in the movie reach into a large box and pull out a sword that read ‘Mors-Mihi-lucrum’ meaning ‘Death is my reward’, revealing him as the Marvel superhero, Black Knight. The same post-credit scene also featured the voice of Mahershala Ali, as the MCU’s anticipated Blade, asking Whitman if he was ‘ready’.
Marvel being Marvel, it is futile to speculate what this all adds up to, but one thing is certain, Harry Styles in the MCU is a gift we did not know we need but are certainly glad we now have.
