For those who can’t get enough of Money Heist and all it has to offer, Netflix has a solution with a Korean adaptation of Money Heist, subtitled, Joint Economic Area. The good news, fans won’t have to wait long to their first look at the upcoming series as the streamer has released a new and exciting trailer, giving viewers an idea of what to expect.
The newly released trailer introduces viewers to a group of individuals who intend to rob the biggest Financial Institution in their country. However, their motives go beyond blind greed. From the trailer, we understand there’s a push for a state of balance between North Korea and South Korea using a unified currency; however, the purpose of introducing a common currency between the two nations for a stable joint economy goes against expectations as the rich keep getting richer and the poor get poorer, leading to a continued imbalance of socioeconomic equality.
Considering the recently concluded original series was a critically acclaimed hit, it will be curious to see what the Netflix adaptation offers viewers as new and interesting. However, one thing the trailer sells is assuring viewers an action-packed ride that pays respectful homage to its parents series.
As is common with adaptations, it is unusual for fans to wonder how Money Heist: Korea- Joint Economic Area will differ from the original Money Heist (La Casa De Papel). Well, here lies the answer to that; while many elements of the story remain the same such as the character names – Nairobi, Tokyo, Berlin, Rio and Professor, who remains the mastermind behind the plot and the crew, the change of location – and even the series title – introduces a new layer of class warfare and cultural influence that influences the social and financial elements of the story. Additionally, the signature Korean storytelling that has acquired global applause will be applied to the already critically acclaimed plot which will give viewers a new variation of the story that will simultaneously feel familiar but novel.
Another exciting change fans can look forward to includes alterations in the mask; in the original series, the Dali mask symbolizes freedom in Spain, while the Hahoe mask in Korea depicts criticism of the powerful. Though this change might seem superficial, it is incredibly vital as it represents the shift in focus between the parent series and adaptation.
The newly released trailer puts the main characters of the adaptation centre stage; viewers are introduced to the talented actors who are playing new versions of characters they know and love including Professor who is played by Yoo Ti Jae alongside, Jang Yoon Ju (Nairobi), Jeon Jong Seo (Tokyo), Lee Hyun Woo (Rio), Lee Kim Jihoo (Denver) and Park Hae So (Berlin).
