The following contains spoilers about the seventh-season premiere of “Game of Thrones.”

The premier of the seventh season aired a few nights ago and everyone was like:

Like many people (the entire world), I struggled to watch the episode as soon as it came out but alas, life got in the way. I had work and so many issues kept popping up so I ended up seeing it at the end of the day yesterday, which as it turns out, was not so bad after all.

Game of Thrones is the BIGGEST thing that has ever been on TV and the first episode of the seventh season certainly reminded us of that. While there were no big battles or explosions, the show still delivered – particularly with the first scene.

For me, once that scene came before the intro, I knew it was going to be a big deal. I don’t think it has ever been done on this show before (although I might be wrong), where a scene comes before the theme song. So yeah, that got me hyped up.

At first, it presented like a Walder Frey flash back, where we have the mean spirited old man appreciating his closest kin; oh, but after a few seconds, I realised how wrong I was.

I really want to talk about EVERYTHING that went down in this episode but as someone who still reads on after the ‘Spoiler Warning’ – even when I don’t want to (I have no self-control), I’m just going to proceed with caution so I don’t ‘overspoil’ it for whoever is reading and hasn’t watched it yet.

Let’s just say, ‘Arya came, she saw and she conquered’. House Frey is no more. The North Remembers.

Now, if you ask me, this is exactly how you should start off a season like this. The seventh season has a lot to live up to considering the explosive final two episodes of the sixth season. So obviously, while they couldn’t begin this season with battles or what not – this was definitely the way to go. It perfectly set up the tone and what to expect for the seventh season while simultaneously assuring us that we will not be disappointed.

After this, thanks to Bran, we see the massive army of the White Walkers and my beloved Wun Wun is among them. I have to ask though, is this really Wun Wun? I mean, he died at Winterfell so it makes no sense for the Night King to have access to his body? But as unfortunate as all of that is, we have good news: Bran and Meera make it to the wall.

Before we go any further, can we just talk about how good Edd looks as the new Lord Commander of the Night’s watch.

 

I wonder how long it will take before Bran reunites with his family at Winterfell. Jon and Sansa are already butting heads over which would be the best way to rule. Jon chooses not to punish the remaining members of Karstarks and the Umbers, after some of their members chose to fight with Ramsey Snow. I lowkey agree with Sansa sha. Yes, Jon has a point, the Umbers and Karstarks have been by the Starks side for centuries, but Sansa is right, they broke faith and there needs to ‘a punishment for treason and reward for loyalty’.

But while I hate to admit it, Jon kinda has a point – I’m sha Team Sansa on this but I understand where Jon is coming from, especially when he calls out the members of the Umbers and Karstarks in the meeting and makes them re-pledge their allegiance to the Starks. You can tell he’s going to be good at this.

People, Bella Ramsey slays again and again as Lyanna Mormont. Lyanna is a very formidable character on her own but Bella portrays her so excellently that I’m so glad they did not go with a slightly older actress.

Before we know it, Cersei is up to her old tricks again. She rightly points out that she has enemies coming from all sides and Jamie reminds her that she has no allies – cue Euron Greyjoy. Why is this man so slimy though? Honestly.

For a moment, I thought the role had been recast but turns out the actor just got a haircut.

Right after this, we run into ol’ Samwell Tarly literally doing what could possibly be the shittiest job in their universe; but at least someone believes his story of the Whitewalkers – I love you, Archmaester Ebrose. Sam eventually plays a sly one and steals the keys for the restricted area of the library, in hopes to find a solution for Jon to the Whitewalker problem. You can do it, Tarly.

Right after this, Sansa gets into a battle of quips with Littlefinger which serves no other purpose but to remind us that we should be cautious of Littlefinger – as if the whole world and the Devil didn’t already know that.

Next up: ED SHEERAN!!! This cameo made me happy in ways it really shouldn’t have, particularly because the entire scene wasn’t focused on him, like “look, it’s Ed Sheeran, you must stare at his face.” Although 90% of Game of Thrones fans will disagree – people, just need to calm down.

Immediately after that, we learn something very important: The Hounds feels remorse. Yes, really. From the get go, it’s obvious that this character had layers to him but it’s always nice when we see ‘subtleties’ like these amidst his grumpy exterior.

Meanwhile, his scene with Beric Dondarrion has me impatiently waiting for this scene from the season seven trailer:

Finally, in one the books, Sam find literally a mountain load of dragonglass beneath the ground at Dragonstone. Rejoice, Sam’s theft pays off! I appreciate the next scene almost as much because at least we now know where TF Jorah Mormont is.

Despite dire conditions, he only wants to know about his beloved Dany, isn’t that sweet?

Let’s take a moment to talk about the fact that the mother of dragons literally shows up in the last five minutes of the episode, says only three words and steals the entire damn episode.

Dammit, People!! Dany is in Westeros! (Well, almost). She officially landed in Dragonstone (Yes, the same Dragonstone with the dragonglass), which is a small island just off Westeros.

Also, Jon Snow might meet Daenerys sooner than you think because as earlier mentioned, Sam found a shitload of Dragonglass on Dragonstone and he sent word to Jon and not too long after that, we see Dany arriving her birthplace (Dragonstone). I’m legit too excited to see the King in the North meet the Dragon Queen (his aunt).

It’s a powerful scene, Dany returning to dragonstone, you get the whole ‘she is finally home’ vibe; although, her job is not yet done. Not nearly. I need this woman to go head-to-head with Cersei…I just need it. Will the two ever share time on screen? Who knows? Really, who knows, so I can ask him.

All in all, the game of thrones premiere episode was pretty damn hot. Although tbh, I never think any Game of Thrones episode doesn’t measure up; abi, I just never admit it to myself.

As expected, this has gotten me excited for the remaining six episodes in the season. I want more.

There have been many spoilers and plot leaks when it comes to this season but no matter how much we read up and prepare ourselves for what to expect from this season, we still remain like Jon Snow – we know nothing. Well, not nothing per se, but not enough.
