Let’s talk Dunkirk. I mean, it comes from the mind of Christopher Nolan, what else do you need to know? At this point, Nolan is basically ‘Hollywood Royalty’. He puts out only a few films every few years or so and they are all smashing successes.
Now Dunkirk is a war thriller film and it boasts an excellent cast with the likes of James D’arcy (Jarvis!!), Cillian Murphy (with those piercing blue eyes), Fionn Whitehead, Jack Lowden, Aneurin Barnard, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy and yes, Harry Styles.
Speaking of Harry Styles, if you’re going to cross over to acting – this is how you do it. I know many people had their doubts about Harry acting in this, but let’s be real, if he didn’t know how to act, would Christopher Nolan cast a former boy-bander? Nah, that would make CN a sellout and how he can he be a sellout when he owns the whole freaking industry. #JustSaying.
Besides, Nolan didn’t even know about Harry or One Direction before he cast him.
Anyway, Dunkirk is set in World War II, May 1940 and it tells the story of the Dunkirk Evacuation after Germany advanced into France and succeeded in trapping hundreds of thousands of the allied troops on the Dunkirk beaches. When telling this story, Nolan purposefully used little dialogue and relied on the details to create suspense.
Told from three perspectives – the land, air and sea – we witness how the troops were evacuated from this seemingly impossible situation.
I especially like the film’s tagline: When 400,000 men couldn’t get home, home came for them.
It looks like Christopher Nolan has another hit on his hands. Weh Done, Sir.

I have seen #Dunkirk and it is a triumph: beautifully filmed, deeply moving, strong turns all round (and yes, that includes Harry Styles)

FWIW I thought DUNKIRK was heads above most everything else this year. Pure, maximum cinema. All sea and sky and Rylance.

Also, #Dunkirk is a war film, but not like one I've ever seen before. It's the closest I could imagine to being there. It's loud and brutal.
